measuring how tall a dinosaur is outside with yarn

After reading some facts about dinosaurs, some of our students wanted to see how tall Tyrannosaurus was. So we decided to go outside and use our meter stick to measure 20 feet tall. We grabbed our book, yarn and our meter stick and headed outside.

The shortest dinosaur was the Hypsilophodon. It was 3 feet tall.

We converted our measuring units from centimetres to feet and started measuring.

Nezar recorded all the finding and how many more feet we had to go.

Each student held a foot at time as we counted to 20 feet.

How many friends could fit on the 20 foot dinosaur?
We all were able to stand on the yarn! 22 friends in all!

How many friends could fit on the 3 foot dinosaur?
Only 4 friends were able to stand on the yarn.

The students had a great time investigating how tall and how short the dinosaurs were.
When asked which dinosaur would you have liked to be? The Tyrannosaurus or the Hypsilophodon? these were some of the responses we got........
I want to be the Tyrannosaurus.......because..........
Abdullah said because it has sharp teeth.
Talal said b/c it's tall
Hamza said b/c it has claws.
Donna said b/c it stomps loud.
Nezar said b/c it's scary.
Anabiya said b/c he is the king.
Remal said b/c it's big.
Mariam said b/c it has a short neck.

Bilal was the only one that said he would like to be the shorter dinosaur because you can hide from the other dinosaurs and they won't be able to see him.
