John R Park Homestead
How to make -Maple Syrup
Our trip to John R Park Homestead began with a long bus ride,
but we made the most of it by singing songs and talking with our friends.
When we got there we where brought into a building where we were
shown some of the tools the farmers. Also it was mentioned to us how the
tree growth process occurs and how sap is collected.
This is the how they would pick up hot rocks to place
in the opened logs.
A hammer to help tap the trees
Here is a hollow branch where the farmers would
use to tap a tree to get sap from.
Here is the tap the farmers use now.
This is the sap that comes from the tree before the
process begins to maple syrup.
This is how the farmers tap the trees and where the sap is
collected in the buckets
An old fashion drill to drill a hole in the tree.
Here is our children giving it a try! It took a lot
of coordination to hold it and turn at the same time.
We moved on to the buckets where the farmers had to
carry the sap back to the barn. Our students giving it a try.
We were told how the farmers had to boil the sap and in
order for that not to happen they would put a piece of
beef fat to help it to keep from boiling over.
